Who needs a face when you got high boobs and broken arms amiright?

Ok, so I actually had so much fun with this. On the left is a drawing I made around two years ago I think, when I first started actually drawing. As you can see it’s got some problems.

Besides the obvious anatomy issues, (what is going on with those arms honestly), the character also has a really boring, basic pose, no expression, (or face), no details, and no dimension. It was drawn with no consideration of how it could exist in a 3D space and looks outrageously flat because of it. I was trying to make this character look tired, but none of that comes through in the pose.

Another thing you can’t see here, this is one drawing in the middle of a big page. So much room was left around it that I just drew the redraw right next to it on the same paper. One tip for starting artists: fill the page with as many sketches as you can, if the drawing isn’t the focus of the page there’s less pressure to perfect/ finish it, allowing you to just sketch. And the more you sketch the more you improve.

When I redrew this character, I paid special attention to the face and the clothing. I wanted to give the character a face, to show that I can draw eyes now, and to have an opportunity for expression, though I don’t think I stretched it as much as I could have. I put a lot of work into the clothes, making them look thick and cozy and 3D.

I didn’t change the pose too much because I felt it would be harder to make a comparison if it was completely different, but I did tilt the character so she wouldn’t be a head on nightmare anymore.

One thing I really attribute to how much I have improved is the use of references. By looking at other people’s art and how they did things, as well as looking at my own lovely face and hands in the mirror, I was able to teach myself and understand more how the body works.

Funny enough, the more I use references the less I feel the need for them as I draw again. I’ve become comfortable, developed a style, and I use references now more for different poses and less for how to draw hands or faces or hair.

Another really important thing is consideration of how your art could exist in a 3D space. I used to draw everything at a head on angle, which is basically the worst way to go about that. Tilt your characters, draw faces at 3/4 angles, exaggerate poses, add wrinkles to clothes, consider form and gravity, add shading and curves. All of this will help you characters look more real, even if you have a more cartoony style like mine.

Don’t just draw in your style either! It’s perfectly fine to like semi-realistic or cartoony styles, but don’t confine yourself, and remember you can’t break the rules unless you know what they are. Find a picture of a beautiful human and do a study, draw as realistically as you can, work on your shading and anatomy. It helps so much, trust me.

And the most important thing: keep drawing! You can’t improve if you don’t work on it. Anyone, no matter their ability, can draw well if they put in the time and effort. Don’t at me saying I’m so talented and you can only draw stick figures. This didn’t just happen, (as I hope the drawing on the right shows), and if you really want to you can improve your art just as drastically.

I’m very happy with how much I have improved, but I have filled several sketchbooks since 2017, and I can still improve further. Right now I’m trying to work on my posing and my copic work, and I hope if in a couple years if i redraw this again I’m even better.
