The Tombs of Atuan. Second in the Earthsea Cycle. Pauline Ellison illustration of course. Sparrowhawk / Ged is standing behind Lookfar’s mains’l. I wanted to make it better, but came to the conclusion that I’d screw it up.

@WingGret1971 ♥️♥️✌🏻🇳🇮🇺🇸 fortunately the shading in the import keeps my colors soft. Which for this particular piece is exactly what I wanted.

I am fascinated by her. Is that a rosary in her hands?

@Abigail Brown It was a bit confusing but I think it’s the rope attached to the tiller. No rosary in this story. It’s about the hunt for the ring of Erreth Akbar — which was actually more of a small bracelet and was broken eons ago and one piece lost. Ged found half of it. Since it’s always been a powerful amulet for peace and unity, he goes on what seems like a foolhardy quest to find the missing half. 👇🏼

You’re fascinated by Ahra / Tenar. Naturally. Her story is heartbreaking and ultimately transformational. She was chosen and taken from her family at age four by the leaders of her country’s official (and very dark) cult. Her birth name was Tenar. The cult renamed her Ahra “The Eaten One.” Next in an endless line of women who are the original Ahra reincarnated. Of course she believes it. And yet ... LeGuin takes you into her head. Her beliefs and confusion. You really feel them.

@Abigail Brown it really is. But it doesn’t start out complex. Pretty straightforward until you get deeper into the story. The story of how Ged found part of the ring is fascinating. Haunting and serendipitous.

@Abigail Brown just remembered — when the ring broke, it cracked across a powerful rune for wholeness that had been lost to the world ever since. Its rediscovery was critical to the future of Earthsea.

This truly is gorgeous artwork, I love the storyline. One question, is this from a book or are you just making it up so we believe it? Either way, I believe it
