Ladybug gaped at Chat Noir, shocked. She was torn between feeling angry or feeling compassionate. But as soon as he said she'd never understand what pain was, her temper had burst. "Oh, so you think you could just tell me that since I haven't been through what you have, that I wouldn't understand pain? Loss? You think that just because I have a family that I'm automatically the luckiest person alive?" Her voice rose with every word. "MY PARENTS WORKED THEIR BEHINDS OFF EVERY DAY SO I COULD GET INTO THAT SCHOOL! YOU THINK IT WAS CHEAP? SOME WEEKS WE HAD TO SKIP RENT TO PAY TUITION, NO MATTER HOW MANY OVERTIME NIGHTS WE WORKED! OH, AND HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOUR SO-CALLED FRIEND, CHLOE?" She pulled up the sleeves of her jacket angrily, brandishing her wrists at him. "CUTS! CUTS, ADRIEN! EVERY DAY ALL THROUGH EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADE, BUT DID I COMPLAIN? NO! BECAUSE I WASN'T GOING TO DO THAT TO MY FAMILY AFTER THEY HAD DROPPED ALL THEIR MONEY ON ME! I STITCHED THEM UP MYSELF JUST SO THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY A MEDICAL BILL!" she screamed, tears running down her face. She stopped to catch her breath, but saw Chat's expression. He looked frightened at her outburst, and his eyes were shining with tears as well. "Look. What my point was...Pain isn't a competition to see who's been through the most. Even if you think you're the only one going through something, others can help you move on as well." Ladybug said quietly. Chat nodded. He didn't trust himself to speak. If he had, he was positive nothing but sobs would have come out. They turned and walked back to the desk, where Officer Roger was waiting. "Do either of you know a boy by the name of Adrien Agreste, by any chance?" he asked. Chat turned a pale pink as Ladybug looked up at him. "We might. Would you like us to get him for you? He might have a few words to say to his father." Ladybug replied for Chat. The two headed outside, where the lingering tension of their shouting match hung thick in the air. Chat looked down at Ladybug. As Adrien, he hadn't even been allowed out of the house until a few months ago, so he had no idea what Marinette had done to herself. He understood the difficulty of having to always keep two faces on -the superhero and the civilian- though. He and Ladybug swung up to her bakery to get some rest after the events of today. "What about your dad?" she asked. It was the first time they'd spoken to each other all morning. "What about him?" Chat asked. "I don't care. I never did, to be fair. I tried at first, but he always pushed me away. Sometimes literally." He unzipped his jacket, showing a scar on his arm. "I broke a plate once when I was younger, and the shards were everywhere. My dad was in one of his moods. He made me clean it up by myself, and didn't even check if I was alright. One of the pieces cut me and it had started to bleed, but he didn't notice. He just walked away." He sighed, picking at Marinette's pink bedspread. "And from that point on, I never asked him for anything...ever again." Ladybug scooted closer to him, draping an arm around him. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that alone, and I feel terrible about blowing up at you back at the police station. From now on, we stick together. As a team. You used your Miraculous to escape from the pain you hid. I used mine to make sure no one had to feel my pain like I did. That's what makes us worthy. I create joy while you destroy darkness. Total opposites, but always together." Without a conscious thought, she wrapped her arms around his waist, curling up next to him. "I'm glad you never left, Chaton." she whispered. Chat looked over at her drooping eyelids. "Are you falling asleep on me?" he teased lightly. Her eyes snapped open, only to fall shut again. "No! No, not at all..." She yawned. "Five minutes. That's it." she insisted sleepily. He smiled. "Of course, Bugaboo." As Ladybug fell asleep and detransformed, Tikki flew to his side. "Thank you for helping her, Adrien." she said.
