Marinette cried into her pillow, muffling the sound so her parents wouldn't think something was wrong. She didn't want to live like this. Adrien meant way too much to her, and seeing him die would crush her. She forced her mind away from the thought, and fell into a dreamless sleep. Monday came and went. She went to school, but there was no work to be done since they'd taken finals a week prior. All anyone talked about was the gala. Marinette didn't want to hear the compliments, concerns, or admiration from the students. She just wanted to go home. Adrien noticed the bags under her red eyes, and led her outside after school. "Marinette..." "I'm fine." she insisted, picking up her bag. "Just a little tired. I'll be good for patrol tonight, I promise." He looked her in the eyes. She wasn't fine. Not even close. But he didn't want to be the reason. "I-" "Patrol. Sleep. Things to do. I'll be fine, Adrien. Don't forget to take the potion." she said, walking away. Adrien wasn't going to let that happen. "Plagg, claws out!" he yelled after he fed him a piece of camembert. He flew through the streets as Chat Noir, landing lightly on Marinette's balcony. He tapped on the window. "It's me! Open up!" he said, peeking inside. "Naughty kitty. Didn't anyone ever tell you it's rude to spy?" he heard someone say from behind him. He whipped around, catching sight of Ladybug. "Evening, Bugaboo." Chat kissed her hand, grinning slightly. "I have an idea. Come with me." They swung off to the lock bridge, where André had set up shop. He was stunned to see the two superheroes coming for ice cream, and quickly prepared a treat for them. "Hi, André." Ladybug said. "Ladybug and Chat Noir! Still the super couple of my shop." "Lemon for his hair, mint for his eyes, and dark chocolate for his strong disguise." André sang, handing Ladybug her ice cream. "As for you, young man...Strawberry with dark chocolate chips, blackberry for her hair, and blueberry for her sky blue stare!" André handed Chat Noir his ice cream, remembering exactly who he'd served it to before. André knew Adrien was Chat Noir, and Marinette was Ladybug. He'd spotted it the day he'd been akumatized, and he'd heard the news about Gabriel. He hoped the heroes stayed in love for the rest of their days. The couple sat down on a bench, looking at the Seine swirling beneath them. Ladybug smiled at her ice cream, tasting it. The flavors combined perfectly. Then she thought about what Chat had said. 'You have so much more life to live, Marinette. But for me...I'm just a face in the papers.' Did he really think that? He was so much more than a model, so much more than some daddy's boy. Adrien was one of the kindest, most open-minded people she knew. His health meant everything to her. Without the charisma of Chat Noir, Ladybug would have succumbed to every akuma they'd fought. "A penny for your thoughts?" Chat's soft voice echoed through her mind. "I'm just...trying to get it out of my head. I know it's inevitable, but I just wanted to spend time with you. You make me feel so happy whenever you're around, and I'm sorry if I ever said I hated your jokes. They're really funny. Chat, you're the most gentlemanly boy I've ever met, and you really know how to love a woman like a queen. That's not something I see a lot. Before you go, I want to say thank you." Her eyes began to prickle again. "For everything you've done, and to think of a world you're not in-that's a world I don't want to live in." She set her ice cream down on the bench and gave him a huge hug, tears dropping onto his suit. "Because I love you, Chat Noir. I love you more than anything else." He was speechless, but the moment needed no words. She pulled away as he unclipped something from his belt. It was a lock. Etched into the side was a green paw print and a red ladybug. "I had it made a few days ago. Will you do the honors?" Ladybug clipped it to the bridge, smiling at the thought of unbroken love. If only it existed for her.
