Ladybug stepped away from the bridge, sitting down to finish her ice cream before patrol. The two didn't talk much that evening. She was buried in thought and trying to avoid sadness, but decided being distracted wasn't the best way to patrol. She unclipped her yoyo and was about to go home when she felt Chat's arm on hers. "I can get home on my own." she said stiffly. "Just because you can do it alone doesn't mean you have to." he said, taking off alongside her. They landed on the balcony and detransformed, heading into Marinette's room. Only then did she notice his last vial of potion was gone. Even worse was the sight of the black tendrils creeping up his forearms and neck. "Adrien..." she said, hand over her mouth. "It's not as bad as it seems, I promise." he reassured her. "Here. I'll prove it. Let's play a song and dance, okay?" he said calmly, opening his phone. Music surrounded the couple as they swayed on their feet, in the middle of her room. Marinette didn't realize Adrien was singing along until the second part began to play. She remembered him saying he'd meow her a serenade one day. His voice was crystal clear, like a river flowing over land. "I'll wake you up with some breakfast in bed, I'll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head, and I'll take the kids to school, wave them goodbye, and I'll thank my lucky stars for that night." he sang. Emma. Hugo. Louis. The names Marinette had picked out for their kids back in tenth grade. Now she'd never be able to start a family with the love of her life. The tears fell without permission as she sat down, hugging Adrien hard. "I-wanna live with you-even when we're ghosts...cause you were-always there for me-when I needed you most." Adrien's voice began to fade out as the black energy crept up his neck. Marinette sobbed even harder, holding on tight as she heard his heartbeat grow fainter and fainter. The last line of the song played, and Marinette and Adrien sung in perfect harmony one last time. "Just say you won't let go." "I love you, Marinette." she heard him whisper as his eyes closed and his heart beat out one last, final note. "Adrien?" she whispered, not wanting to let go. "Adrien. Adrien please wake up. Please don't be dead don't die on me I can't do it alone please wake up wake up WAKE UP!" Her shaking voice cut through the silence, waking her parents. Tikki and Plagg hid in her jacket sleeves as she leaned over Adrien's body, sobbing hard. "Marinette, what-oh my God. Tom, call the ambulance!" Sabine said, seeing her daughter crouched next to Adrien's withered figure. "It's no use, Mom." Marinette said, standing up. "He's gone. He's gone. HE'S GONE AND HE DIED AND THIS ISN'T HAPPENING!" Marinette screamed, shaking as she cried. "HE CAN'T BE DEAD NOT NOW NO no no no..." Her voice cut off into more weeps as her mother wrapped her arms around her. Tom lifted Adrien's body from the carpet, carrying it to the car. Marinette sat in the backseat, gently stroking his hair as she mourned the loss of her partner. They pulled into the hospital drive, where doctors rushed Adrien into the ER. But only a few minutes later did a doctor return, an expression of pity on her face. "I'm sorry, ma'am. We couldn't save him." Those words broke Marinette's heart even more. She rushed outside of the building, ignoring her parents, summoning Tikki. "Spots on." she cried, every inch of happiness withered away. Plagg hovered in front of her, then hugged her cheek. "He was so nice to me, and always gave me cheese, even when I was rude sometimes...And now he's gone and I didn't even say thank you." he confessed. Ladybug did nothing but sit on the rooftop. She sat there all night, watching the sun rise, getting poured on by the morning rain, seeing the body of her only love carried into a hearse and driven to the funeral home. She couldn't bring herself to follow the hearse as it drove past. It would only bring her more pain as she grieved for her lost love.
