“Cotton candy is the best.”
“No, you idiot. Candy corn and licorice is the best.”
“I prefer those gumdrop candies.”
People are everywhere. A small girl is sitting in my lap as I drive, asking everyone what their favorite candy is.
An elderly woman sits in the backseat with an angry drunk. A quiet loner is sitting on the console between the front seats and a girl is asleep in the passenger seat.

4 years ago The small girl in my lap sighs. “Sir,” She says to me. “Would you wanna live with us?”
“Sure,” I say to the elderly lady, who asked if I like licorice.
The little girl nods. Then she grabs the steering wheel and points to a clearing in the woods. “Go there.”
“Alright,” I say to her.
We begin to drive there and suddenly the sleeping woman awakens.
She looks out the window and screams, yelling: “Axel, no no no. Axel, stop the car!”
I want to ask her why, but suddenly-

4 years agoI see why.
The clearing isn’t a clearing. My vision clears and I see that I’m a few feet from driving off the edge of a cliff.
The little girl slaps my face. “KEEP GOING!”
I hit the pedal and go faster, despite the screams of the other girl. A dog howling fills the mix of sounds.
And then we’re falling, weightless and free.
The world goes black.
“Axel...”
I open my eyes. The old lady, loner, little girl, and angry drunk are all gone.

4 years ago But the girl who was asleep in the passenger side and a small dog are still here.
“Do you... remember me?” She asks.
I shake my head.
And then suddenly she’s leaning forward and hugging me tightly, squeezing the air from my lungs.
I hug her back, shocked to find myself remembering the smell of her hair.
Ashes and sunshine.
“Do you remember me now?” She asks as she pulls back.
I hate it as I shake my head, watching as the Hope leaves her eyes and is replaced my deep-

“Do you remember Fuzzy?” The girl holds up a small beagle.
“No,” I whisper, then rub the dogs head.
The girl holds out a hand. “I’m Zaedia. We used to be friends, but then I started losing you.”
“I’m sorry,” I say, meaning it.
“Do you remember Sene?”
And there. A flash of sea green eyes and a slightly crooked smile. The scent of rain and power, mixed with joy. A soft chuckle near my ear and the thrill of a kiss.
“Yes,” I breathe. “I remember Sene.”

4 years ago She smiles. “Do you remember Axel?”
I pause, thinking. “Does Axel have orange hair and an attitude?”
“No. That’s Loki.”
I shrug. “Then, no. I have no clue who Axel is.”
The girl, Zaedia, tries for a smile and fails miserably. “Axel is kind and intelligent, but often sarcastic. He’s got an interesting view on things. He loves pink and is scared of almost everything.”

4 years ago I sigh. “He sounds nice.”
“Yeah,” she closed her eyes and lays back on the sand. “He is.”
I look around and take in the remains of the car, then look at my leg. It has a giant piece of metal sticking from it.
I tap the metal and wait, but no pain shoots through me.
Only a sad void.
Just as sad as the vast expanse of sand that we’ve landed on.
Sene. I hold this name close to me as I close my eyes, curling up and sighing. Sene.
Something warm curls up in my arm and-
