I know that Recolor is not a place to debate but I am genuinely curious of what you guys think. Backstory: (Keep in mind I am a college freshman and my brother is in 10th grade) So my brother came home yesterday and told us there has been a few changes to homework and the grading system. He said “they are giving us less homework because they realize most of us are in sports/clubs or working and homework would just be too much to juggle…”

When it comes to the grading system it is basically impossible to fail the class, even when you don’t do any of the class work. My opinion: I feel that homework is important, it develops your problem solving and time management skills. I had to juggle 5 clubs, volunteering, choir in general (after school rehearsals, learning the songs on my own time, concerts, and other things that popped up that I had to make time for), lesson planning for preschool, and still make time for homework.

Homework helps you in the long run too, with college and even jobs. For example, college is mostly homework. They teach you the lesson and they don’t give you time during class to do homework. The average time it takes a college student to do homework is an hour per class, for me that’s 3 hours and you still need to find time to work. I know you are probably going to say “college is not for everyone” and you are totally right, so let’s talk about how homework may effect job.

When you get a job you have to juggle many things like your sleep schedule, work (at the work place and home), a family, and still have time for things you want to do. Where do you first learn how to juggle? Homework. In addition, homework just helps you remember the material so you do better on the test. I feel that close to no homework and basically giving away a free ticket to pass classes is not a solution to the work load that students face. School is turning into a daycare!!!

So, what are your thoughts? (Please be kind and respect each other’s opinion. This debate got REALLY heated when I talked to my friend.)

It’s good because it can help students understand what is going on and can help them improve. However if you assign them too many then that may not help them and can put them in a state of burnout or having no time to take breaks which will not be good for their mental health. That’s just my opinion on it

My point exactly @🖤Inknotfound🖤 if you take homework away completely students will start doing poorly on test causing the to fail the class. You are right, having too much homework with mess with their mental health.

I agree with everything you’ve said. I think having homework teaches time management skills and shows that hard work pays off and that if you really try your best and put in the effort it will benefit you in the end. I also think homework is a great way to review the lesson that was taught in class that day, and for me, it helps me to kind of realize that maybe I don’t understand the lesson as well as I thought I did, so if I’m struggling on the homework I’ll realize that I need to ask for help-

-but at the same time, too much homework can just be overwhelming and can add unnecessary stress.

@Sunshine (2) Okay, in all honesty, homework is really important to learn time management skills, but sometimes teachers overdo it. Like, it think that a 1000 word essay for 1 night of homework is a bit much (that’s what I had last night for AP English)

You know, I totally get that @★𝔚𝔢 𝔄𝔯𝔢 𝔔𝔲𝔢𝔢𝔫𝔰★ too much homework is not ok but giving no homework is not good too. Like there has to be an in between, you know?
