Hello Kelly- I agree a Chow in the wrong hands would be detrimental- this dog would not have faired well in many homes but he is a gentle soul and I could not be happier with him- except if he decides to lick my cheek at some point. It’s been really rewarding to watch his personality emerge - it makes me sad that some breeds are misunderstood or pushed into violence by ignorance- he is a good boy and I trust him. He has lived with me for three years. It took two years to nurse him back to health

Also- I was not expecting his personality to be as it was (I was expecting aloof)- he was a stray picked up by a shelter who then brought him to my state where I adopted him- because I was looking specifically for a purebred chow chow. He was so sick at the time that one would not have been able to properly diagnose his temperament - although the rescue had no clue or interest once I let them know how sick he was. Pretty irresponsible in my opinion.

Once he lived with me, I began to suspect he might’ve been a bait or a fight dog but then I had to have his coat shaved this past July because his undercoat was so unhealthy -once shaved I could see several 5 to 6 inch jagged scars on his throat, shoulders and hips as well as chain scars around his back feet. ☹️

Good morning Jenlou @Peaceful Waters (Jenlou) it makes me want to do violence to some of these people who believe that just because they cannot talk dog have no soul, feelings or personality. Imagine the gall of the people who do these things and then turn their back on them and imagine the unbelievable peace that dog has to still lick the hand of the person who so miss treats them. It seems to me that most animals can communicate to each other. I have seen different species communicate cont ‼️

Cont. with each other. We are the only species that are limited to only be able to talk to each other. I believe God planned it that way. I have know of many cases of rescued Mastiffs who have developed into wonderful pets, it seems to me that they are just looking for the bond. But admittedly I have only real experience with Mastiffs. On the other hand shelters botch the rescue a large % of the time. In that case some responsible adopters will work it out as you have but the others just ‼️

My I am wordy this morning! Return it & go for another. I am seeing this in my newest rescue Amber, she has been bounced so many times through no fault of her own, that she seem so wanting to bond but afraid because she thinks that this is only a stop . But then she has only been here 3 months. I said what I did because my mom and my aunt both owned & raised Chows & they often talked about them. In my decades of show experience I never knew anyone here or in our circle who owned Chows. ‼️🍁

I swear this will be the last one! It would be difficult here, it’s just to hot too much of the time. Where are you? I’m in GA, USA that goes for most of the heavily coated breeds The dog fighting crowd gave up on Mastiffs, they are just two heavy & slow not to mention they just do not have the killer instinct. They were not bred to kill, just to catch & hold. Now they will kill to protect their family. Well I will close on that note‼️🍁
