Josephine Baker, "Black Venus" (1906-1975)
Freda Josephine McDonald was an American-born French entertainer, French Resistance agent, and civil rights activist.
Josephine symbolized the beauty and vitality of black American culture, which took Paris by storm in the 1920s. She went on to become one of the most popular music hall entertainers in France.
On April 12, 1975, Baker died in her sleep of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 68.
